Not one of them has been decent in my ward this year.

Also, assinging a subjecty subject SHOULD elicit references to recent general authority comments on the subject, if the Lord wants these comments to be shared in that particular meeting. However, assigning the specific talk might lead members to exclude OTHER sources/ideas/experiences that the Lord wanted shared. You can't lose with the subject assignment; you have a slim chance of not losing with the talk assignment.Brycehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03552977743122048484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35369601.post-72098160413981303002009-06-05T13:54:08.137-07:002009-06-05T13:54:08.137-07:00The solution is easy: NEVER EVER EVER EVER ASSIGN ...The solution is easy: NEVER EVER EVER EVER ASSIGN A G.C. TALK AS A SUBJECT!!! Instead, assign a subject as a subject (you know, more subjecty subjects, like Charity, Tithing, Atonement, perhaps a section of scripture to be elucidated, Monkeys, Arsenic, Photosynthesis... ANY OF THESE WOULD BE PREFERABLE!!!) As you say, some speakers can do just fine with these assignments, but I have found this to be rather rare. Thus, I always remember to bring a good book (generally religious). When they start into re-digesting an already digested talk, I just turn off my brain, and read or take a nap, or play tic-tac-toe. This actually gives me a better chance at feeling the spirit -- even tic-tac-toe -- because these talks generally fill me with such loathing and disgust and rage that I can only think in profanity if I am paying attention. Luckily, in my current ward, these are not common. :)Latter-day Guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05445248333674006984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35369601.post-10676605177126115292009-06-05T13:14:45.131-07:002009-06-05T13:14:45.131-07:00"Regurgi-talk?" I hope that's not wh..."Regurgi-talk?" I hope that's not what you do when you're asked to give such a talk for sacrament meeting... The Summer and late Fall are prime times for this sort of thing, being just after General Conference.

In my current ward however, these talks have been really good--mostly because the speakers have only alluded to the talks and, at most, read a paragraph. I'm sorry that this does not seem to be the case for you.

I don't know when exactly people started thinking it would be OK to just read from the talks. That's like trying to teach about faith and just reading Alma 32 aloud.

So... good job on your 'criticism.' But how do YOU suggest we best solve this?apbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12727972575654138506noreply@blogger.com
